This proposal seeks to preserve and strengthen our relationship with the water through an integrated program that includes a museum, a maritime research center, and maritime education facilities. The museum celebrates the past, honoring New York City’s rich maritime history, while the research center reflects the present, showcasing advancements in marine science and technology. The education facility anticipates the future, providing opportunities for learning and innovation. Additionally, a ferry terminal will be incorporated into Pier 7, rerouting operations from their temporary location between Piers 6 and 7. This addition activates the pier, supports daily commuter circulation, and addresses immediate urban needs.
The architectural design echoes the site’s maritime legacy, embracing adaptability and hybridity to unlock its multidimensional potential. By prioritizing public engagement while balancing private enterprise, the redevelopment ensures equitable access to the waterfront while addressing climate realities.
Pier 7 is envisioned as a dynamic, living space—one that preserves history through innovation and allows its legacy to evolve and flow seamlessly into the future.
Metabolic Timline: New York Piers
Piers are not blank slates—it carries a rich history and an evolving timeline that shapes its identity.
Site Proximity: Bridging Past and Future
Piers 7-12, faces challenges and opportunities. Rising sea levels demand resilient design, while a growing population calls for sustainable public spaces.
